Highway 97 Reopens as Wildfire Efforts Continue on Blewett Pass
Wildfire Burning
As of August 1, 2023, the Blewett Pass Fire has burned over 1,000 acres and continues to burn out of control. The fire is being fueled by hot and dry conditions as well as gusty winds. Firefighters are working to establish containment lines and protect structures in threatened areas.
Highway Reopens
Highway 97 has reopened following closures due to smoke and fire activity. Motorists are advised to slow down and use caution in the area, as firefighters may be working alongside the highway.
Evacuations
Mandatory evacuations remain in place for the following areas: The town of Blewett, the community of Coles Corner, and the area of I-90 between mileposts 106 and 112. Residents who have evacuated should stay informed about the latest fire conditions and follow the instructions of law enforcement and emergency response personnel.
Air Quality
Smoke from the Blewett Pass Fire is impacting air quality in the surrounding area. The Washington State Department of Ecology has issued an air quality alert for Chelan, Douglas, and Okanogan counties.
