FAA Investigating Substantial Damage to Boeing 737 Max in Dutch Roll Incident

Federal authorities are investigating after a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 Max 8 was damaged by an unusual oscillation known as a "Dutch roll." The incident occurred on May 26, 2023, during a flight from Dallas to San Diego.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft entered a Dutch roll, which is a side-to-side oscillation that can put excessive stress on the aircraft's structure. The FAA said the oscillation caused "substantial damage" to the aircraft's tail.

The aircraft landed safely in San Diego, and no passengers or crew members were injured. The FAA has ordered the aircraft to be grounded pending an investigation.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is also investigating the incident. The NTSB is an independent federal agency that investigates transportation accidents.

Boeing, the manufacturer of the 737 Max, said it is cooperating with the investigations. Boeing said it is "committed to ensuring the safety of its aircraft."
