Earthquakes Strike Los Angeles Region Amidst Winter Storms

Magnitude 4.6 Quake Near Corona

On May 1, 2024, at 17:27 UTC (10:27 AM PST), a preliminary magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck the Los Angeles region, approximately 52 miles from Corona in the Greater Los Angeles Area, California. The epicenter was located at 33.817°N, 117.639°W, at a depth of 92 kilometers.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake was preceded by a magnitude 4.1 tremor at 2:49 PM PT on Wednesday, two miles from Corona. The region has been experiencing a series of winter storms and aftershocks since last week.

In the past 24 hours, the Los Angeles and Southern California area has recorded 11 earthquakes with a magnitude of 1.5 or greater. In the past 7 days, 62 earthquakes have been reported, and in the past 30 days, the region has experienced 250 quakes. Over the past year, 2,956 earthquakes have been recorded in the area.

Residents are advised to remain vigilant and follow safety precautions during earthquake activity. This includes having an emergency plan in place, securing loose objects, and knowing where to seek shelter in case of a major quake.
